Reading Players in Holdem
Beginners in No Limit Holdem poker start off by trying to learn which hands are strong and which ones are weak as well as the art of proper betting. Most of the time, they focus on their own hand. But to be truly successful in the game, you need to be able to get a good read of your Poker opponent’s hand also. Here are a few tips on how to read your opponent.
The calling station. This is the player who is also referred to as the weak-passive. He is the one who will call a big raise with trash cards and go on calling you down, regardless of whether they think you are beat or not. They usually take what we call the ATC strategy or the “any two cards” strategy. He will likely almost every, if not every, single hand and will also even fold a hand.
This is the type of Poker player that is frustrating to play against because they tend to stay in a hand regardless of its value, sometimes outdrawing you by weaker holdings or long shot draws. If he’s sitting to your right, then good for you. This will allow you to act after them. Be careful when certain draws hit the board, most especially on the river.
The gambler. He differs from the calling station in that he will be aggressive at playing his hand. In some sense, he is the calling station’s exact opposite. He will raise and probably even reraise with any two cards. He will also have the same betting style on all streets. A gambler is difficult to put on a hand because they are likely to play pocket aces the same way they play seven deuce offsuit. When a gambler is running hot, he will make a big score. Over time though you will see that this type of player walks away with not only a loss but several buy-ins. If you’re playing against one, be patient and solid in your game.
Rocks. They are the easiest type to spot at a table. They don’t play that many hands. When they do, they will most likely have a monster hand. They have the tendency to play their hands very passively and won’t do a lot of raising. Rocks follow ABC Poker minus the killer instinct.
Solid tight-aggressive players. They are sharks at the table. A player of this type will be selective with the hands he plays but is not as passive at betting. He will not only play monster hands but will use his position at the table to his full advantage. He is a certified pro who has all the tools for a win, from bluffing to check-raising. He is the one who usually slowly builds his stack or stacks players whenever challenged with an inferior hand.
Try and develop a skill in spotting player types. Once you have, you will not have much problem exploiting their weaknesses to your advantage.
