The Art of Bluffing in No Limit Holdem Poker

Every Poker player knows that aside from the ins and outs of the Poker Games, the next thing you need to master is the art of bluffing. It is considered a normal part of all forms of poker. But everyone knows that a properly executed and well-timed bluff is best rewarded when playing No Limit Holdem poker. Here are a few pointers you need to consider the next time you think of pulling off a bluff.

Ask yourself, how many players are there in the pot? Bluffing is almost pointless when you are playing a hand in a pot with more than two players. The odds are against you in this situation because it is very likely that someone has a hand. The risk of bluffing here may cause you to lose your chips for nothing. Keep in mind that bluffing is more likely to work for you when you are playing against two Poker players or just one.

The next factor to consider is the type of read you have on your opponent. Is he the type to keep a tight, rock solid attitude during the game? Look for patterns in their behavior. When he misses a flop, does he check? Is he the type that can check-raise? Know you opponent’s temperament and behavior to certain events in the game. Bluffing is a mind game. You need to have the proper read on your opponent in order for your bluff strategy to succeed.

Third: what type of board is showing? Is it an uncoordinated low board? A paired board? A common bluff used is one which involves betting out into a paired board. Your opponent may choose to play back at you. When this happens, release the hand. When a particular scare card appears, like an ace for example, or a card that could complete a straight, you have another opportunity to bluff. But this is all of course dependent on how the hand unfolds.

Next question you need to ask is how many chips does your opponent have? This one is important when playing tournaments. If your opponent is a medium stack and you bluff to test them for all of their chips, they will be forced to call unless they have a hand. This may not work as well against a player with a short stack of chips because they are more likely to stick to a hand until the river.

Another trick that could work is to allow yourself to get caught bluffing every once in a while. Try this: make a well-timed bluff on the river when you think you are likely to be called. After this bluff, lay low for a while. When you get caught on a bluff, your opponents will keep that in mind and there will be more action in the game. You can also make the same type bet or move with a solid hand if you think the other player will call you on your bluff. This technique will result in a few raises and larger pots.

It is common knowledge in Poker that if you become successful every single time you bluff, then you are doing it all wrong. But if you get caught most of the time, then you are bluffing too much. Find a balance between getting caught and getting away with a bluff. Timing is key to this trick. Master this and you may just win the game.
